FARM junk is being turned into beautiful pieces of art for the second biennial Bush Sculpture Competition, which opens on Friday, after COVID-19 put the event on hold last year.
As well as the large freestanding sculpture category from the inaugural competition in 2018, a small freestanding sculpture has been introduced.
Moulamein Art Gallery president Jill Reed said there had been quite a bit of interest in entries this year.
“We’ve had so much interest from people wanting to participate, we thought we’d put the second category in to give people an alternative,” Ms Reed said.
Entries are still open for artists to enter their pieces.
For section one, the first prize is $2000, with the work also being acquired by the Moulamein Arts and Crafts Council, with the second prize being $500.
Prizes in section two are $500 for first and $200 for second.
It must also be any form of sculpture, made predominantly of recycled farm materials and reflecting an Australian rural theme.
Ms Reed said it was amazing the gallery committee could host the competition this year.
“We’re really excited, and so are quite a few people,” she said.
Ms Reed said the decision to cancel the competition last year was a close call.
“We kept it open until the last minute, and then cancelled it when everything in NSW and everywhere else shut down. We realised it wasn’t going to happen,” she said.
She said some of the artists finishing off their creations from last year, have gone “bigger and bolder”.
In 2018, Ms Reed said they had 25 entries.
Moulamein Art Gallery is open Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10am to 12 noon for patrons to view the sculptures.
All sculptures, except the winner of category one, will be for sale.
The sculptures will remain on display until 12 noon on June 14.
Entries can still be submitted from 10am to 3pm on Friday.
The opening night will begin at 6pm, with the winning entries announced by the judges. Artists and the general public are invited to attend.
