Unique embroidery on show at Peppin Heritage Centre Gallery in Deniliquin

THE Peppin Heritage Centre Gallery in Deniliquin is showcasing a unique exhibition – Beyond Threads: Left-Handed Embroidery.

On display are the works of artist Linda Maher, whose passion for embroidery has been growing since the late 1970s.

Featuring a curated selection of her work, the display shows her intricate designs and creativity.

What truly sets her work apart is her left-handed approach to embroidery.

From the beginning of her artistic journey, she faced challenges in adapting to the traditional right-handed instructions, which often appeared reversed to her.

Overcoming these hurdles, she developed unique techniques that have now become her signature styles.

Maher said her work started off as a hobby.

“Many years ago, I needed something to do with my time,” she said.

“I came across cross stitched pieces in a magazine that were over 100 years old.

“I tried it out and became interested and inspired.

“My pieces are for me to pass down to my children and family.

“I hope people will have a go regardless of their skills.

“There is nothing stopping left-handed people from giving it a try.”

Her innovative approach has not gone unnoticed.

Maher was awarded Best in Show – Craft at the 2023 Royal Melbourne Show for her piece Colin the Rooster.

This piece was a vibrant and detailed work that captured the attention of judges and audiences.

Her talents have also been acknowledged at many regional events and competitions including the Deniliquin Show.

Beyond the traditional methods, she has embraced modern technology to expand her creative skills.

Using PC Stitch, a design program that transforms photographs into detailed patterns, she has been able to craft intricate, lifelike designs that further showcase her skill and vision.

Her works vary in complexity, with some taking just hours to complete while others require years of dedication.

Beyond Threads is more than just an exhibition.

It is a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the beauty of crafting from a unique perspective.

Established in December last year, the exhibition will continue to run during the coming months.

Art enthusiasts, craft lovers, and curious visitors are just a few of the people who are expected to come and see Maher’s inspiring journey and appreciate the delicate art of embroidery through a fresh lens.
