Go, Grease Lightning

GREASE is the word at St Mary Mackillop College, with the school gearing up in anticipation of bringing the beloved musical to the stage later this month.

The cast and crew are made up of Year 7 to 12 students who have been rehearsing since early this year, with the band also being made up of students, staff members and school alumni.

Director Talia Henderson said the show will be a vibrant celebration of teen spirit, friendship, rebellion and romance.

“From toe-tapping favourites like You’re the One That I Want and Greased Lightnin’ to heartfelt moments that explore identity and belonging, this production showcases the immense talent and dedication of the students,” Henderson said.

“Set in the halls of Rydell High School, the story follows the summer romance of Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski as they navigate the ups and downs of teenage life in a time of poodle skirts, milkshakes, and rock ‘n’ roll.

“Students have been rehearsing tirelessly all year and can’t wait to perform for an audience.”

The role of Sandy is played by Year 12 student Poppy Thomas, who said playing the character is like a childhood dream.

“When I was younger, Grease was one of my favourite movies to watch and playing a character I always loved has really helped me fall into the role,” Thomas said.

“I relate to the show greatly as I too am a new kid to town, only just recently moving to Swan Hill late last year; I relate greatly to Sandy as a character and the whole experience of finding new friends again in a new state.”

The Year 12 student said Sandy has a unique character arc throughout the show.

“Sandy differs from the other characters in how she still stands on her own morals throughout the play, and stands for what she believes is correct,” said Thomas.

“Even though she changes at the end of the production, she is showing confidence in herself after finally finding her place.”

Danny Zuko is played by Year 9 student Noah Fleming, who said Danny was a hilarious character and great fun to play.

“Some of the things they say are really funny; Danny is extremely outgoing,” he said.

Opening night will be held at the school’s Jubilee Centre on Friday, August 22 at 7pm.

A Sunday matinee performance is also booked for August 24 at 2pm.
