NDGA SUMMER PENNANT

CONGRATULATIONS to Kerang No.2 pennant team on winning this year’s NDGA Summer Pennant. Nine teams contested the pennant this year, which was a great result.

Kerang defeated Pyramid Hill for the honour of Summer Champions. It was an excellent outcome for Kerang on what was a challenging day.

The fourth round and the final was played last Sunday. Pyramid Hill had a fourth-round bye, so they had to await the outcome of the morning’s play to determine who they would play.

So the Kerang side had to play 36 holes on Sunday, bringing home the bacon two matches to one.

Thanks to Kerang for hosting the final.

Thanks also to all of the clubs who participated and to Balranald as well as Cohuna Golf Clubs for hosting rounds of Summer Pennant.

We now look forward to Winter Pennant.

We will be in touch shortly with details and formats.

MURRAY DOWNS MEN

THERE has been a massive few days of golf played at Murray Downs over the past week, culminating with the playing of the 21st Seniors tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

A field of 240 players in the tournament, with visitors from 54 different clubs joining our Murray Downs members to make the event very successful.

The tournament is divided into different age sections to allow all players to compete against players of similar ages.

The overall 36-hole winner of section 1 (50 to 67 years) for Men was Peter Dooley from Mildura with 72 Stableford points, by way of the countback system, from Mark Sandford from the National Golf Club, closely followed by Russell Manning from Melview with 71 points.

Section 2 (68 to 73 years) went to Daryl Domaille, Murray downs, with 77 points, followed by Robin Hubble, Mildura on 68, with Peter Crothers, Yarrawonga and Shane Kelly, Murray Downs, one point further adrift on 67 points.

John Everingham, from West Lakes in SA, took out section 3 (74+ years) with scores of 40 and 33 for 73, from Chris Magor, also West Lakes, on 68 points, with Murray Downs member Laurie Shipsides next best with 67 points.

In the Women’s sections, section 1 (50 to 71 years), the winner was Helen Fisher from Rainbow, with scores of 35 and 39 for 74, ahead of Rhonda barrow, Murray Downs, with 70 points, with Jenny Baulere, Valley View, next on 69 points.

Joyce White, from Yarrawonga, took out section 2 with 69 points, from Joan Foster and Murray Downs, with 68, closely followed by Maz Morrison, Murray Downs and Helen Emery, Kyabram, both with 66 points.

On Sunday, the Lions Club Charity 4BBB Stableford competition took place, with a field of 80 players participating.

The winners with 45 Stableford points, by way of the countback system, were Chris Knee (26) and Corey Frost (16) from Greg Daniels (23) and Charlie King (10), with the following five pairs of Mary Johnson (32) and Claris Bourne (25), Jonny Hirst and Brenton Cruickshank, Colin Mewburn and Matt Loats, Jesse Day and Brayden Ottery, and Matthew Collins and Steven Pimm, all two points further back on 43 points.

Last Saturday, the competition was a Stableford event being played in three divisions. The best score of the day, 45 points, was recorded by one of our very promising juniors, in Lucas Free (31), to take out division three from Brenton Weybury (20), who finished with 40 points.

Division 2 went to Malcolm Seton-Stewart (12), ahead of Quenten Graham (16), with both players finishing with 38 points apiece.

Bobby Kelly (9) took out division 1 with 40 points, just ahead of Scott Mathiske (3) with 39 points. Sean Baumgurtel, Dale Rogers, John Everingham (West Lakes) and James Williams hit the lucky shots on holes 2, 5, 11 and 15, respectively, while with the ball run-down, scores of 36 points and better were required to get a ball.

Last Thursday, a strong field of golfers took part in the daily Stableford competition, where Paul Raudino (18) was awarded the day’s major prize with a score of 36 points and taking out division 2 from Dave Hogan (9) and Ross Hastings (8), who also finished with 36 points, to be the best in division 1, in this order.

Runner-up in division 2 was John Tripodi (18) with 32 points, while in division 3, it went to Murray Conn (28) over Tony Wilson (28), with both players finishing with 35 points each.

Thirty-two points was the magical mark required to get a ball, whilst the NTPs went to Riley Daniels on the 2nd, Bob Burns on the 5th, Colin Mewburn on the 11th and Ross Hastings on the 15th.

With only one round to play in the WRDGA summer pennant, it’s very tight at the top of the ladder, with Murray Downs currently on top with two wins and one draw, five points, but having the bye this week and second-placed Rich River Green, one win and draws, four points, up against third-placed Barham, one win and one draw on three points, closely followed by Deniliquin, three points, one win and one draw up against Rich River Blue on one point, with no wins and one draw.

With the top two placed teams going on to play off in the grand final, which will be played at Murray Downs on Sunday, April 2.
