The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN

IAN Johansen has taken out the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club’s September monthly medal.

Johansen, playing from a handicap of 14, put together a solid round of golf, for a final net score of 65.

His round consisted of two birdies, which he achieved on holes 12 and 16, with his only blemish being a double bogie coming on the 14th hole.

Johansen finished one shot ahead of Luke Merritt (3) for the coveted medal, with Merritt having to settle for Division 1 honours, with his 66 net.

Runner-up in Division 1 was Brenton Halligan (11) with a 67 net, while Johansen was the best in Division 2 with his 65 net, ahead of a visitor from Donald in Darian Male (18), who scored the runners-up prize with a net 67.

Division 3 was awarded to Rob Smith (24) with a net 71, ahead of Lucas Free (23) who finished with the same score.

The ball rundown was red hot, with Ross Hastings leading the way with a net 67 and Sean Baumgurtel and Steven Bulmer with net 68s, and went down to scores of 72 and better.

Daniel Cruickshank, Luke Merritt, Greg Weybury and Sean Baumgurtel hit the closest shots on the par three holes to win the nearest the pins.

Sunday’s competition was a Stableford event over two divisions, with Chris Knee (25) recording the day’s best score of 39 points, taking out Division 2 ahead of Garry Steinmann (49) with 38 points.

Steven Bulmer (13) topped off a good weekend by being the best in Division 1 with 35 points, getting the favourable nod ahead of Leigh Evans (14) by way of the countback system.

Other players required at least 33 points to be eligible for a ball, while the nearest the pins were taken out by Ken Gregory on the second and Wayne Wisby on holes 11 and 15.

Last Thursday’s competition was also a Stableford event, which was played across three divisions.

The best score of the day was 39 points, which was recorded by Greg Weybury (20) and Dale Rogers (15), who each played in Division 2, with Weybury getting the win.

Seb Linssen (24) was the best in Division 3 with 38 points and finished ahead of Graeme Giddings (28) on 34 points, while in Division 1, Sean Baumgurtel (5) was the best with 37 points, ahead of Doug Grant (8) on 36 points.

The ball run-down went down to scores of 34 points, while Greg Gregory fired in two very good shots on holes 2 and 5 to claim these nearest the pins, as did David Bourne on the 11th and Greg Weybury on the 15th.

Just a reminder to all golfers that the Murray Downs golf annual general meetings will be held in October.

The men’s meeting will be held on Monday, October 16 and the women’s on Wednesday, October 18.

Any full golfing member who wishes to be involved in the committees are encouraged to complete a nomination form, which will be available from the club’s front reception desk.
