MURRAY DOWNS MEN

IAN Johansen has taken out the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club’s September monthly medal.

Johansen, playing from a handicap of 14, put together a solid round of golf, for a final net score of 65.

His round consisted of two birdies, which he achieved on holes 12 and 16, with his only blemish being a double bogie coming on the 14th hole.

Johansen finished one shot ahead of Luke Merritt (3) for the coveted medal, with Merritt having to settle for Division 1 honours, with his 66 net.

Runner-up in Division 1 was Brenton Halligan (11) with a 67 net, while Johansen was the best in Division 2 with his 65 net, ahead of a visitor from Donald in Darian Male (18), who scored the runners-up prize with a net 67.

Division 3 was awarded to Rob Smith (24) with a net 71, ahead of Lucas Free (23) who finished with the same score.

The ball rundown was red hot, with Ross Hastings leading the way with a net 67 and Sean Baumgurtel and Steven Bulmer with net 68s, and went down to scores of 72 and better.

Daniel Cruickshank, Luke Merritt, Greg Weybury and Sean Baumgurtel hit the closest shots on the par three holes to win the nearest the pins.

Sunday’s competition was a Stableford event over two divisions, with Chris Knee (25) recording the day’s best score of 39 points, taking out Division 2 ahead of Garry Steinmann (49) with 38 points.

Steven Bulmer (13) topped off a good weekend by being the best in Division 1 with 35 points, getting the favourable nod ahead of Leigh Evans (14) by way of the countback system.

Other players required at least 33 points to be eligible for a ball, while the nearest the pins were taken out by Ken Gregory on the second and Wayne Wisby on holes 11 and 15.

Last Thursday’s competition was also a Stableford event, which was played across three divisions.

The best score of the day was 39 points, which was recorded by Greg Weybury (20) and Dale Rogers (15), who each played in Division 2, with Weybury getting the win.

Seb Linssen (24) was the best in Division 3 with 38 points and finished ahead of Graeme Giddings (28) on 34 points, while in Division 1, Sean Baumgurtel (5) was the best with 37 points, ahead of Doug Grant (8) on 36 points.

The ball run-down went down to scores of 34 points, while Greg Gregory fired in two very good shots on holes 2 and 5 to claim these nearest the pins, as did David Bourne on the 11th and Greg Weybury on the 15th.

Just a reminder to all golfers that the Murray Downs golf annual general meetings will be held in October.

The men’s meeting will be held on Monday, October 16 and the women’s on Wednesday, October 18.

Any full golfing member who wishes to be involved in the committees are encouraged to complete a nomination form, which will be available from the club’s front reception desk.


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

KATHY Brennan enjoyed the spring conditions at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, with her score of 38 points from her 38 handicap being the best score of the day and ensuring that Kathy will have a new handicap at her next outing.

The runner-up in Division 2 was Judy McMahon (29) on 36 points, while in Division 1, Clare Nalder-Martin (27) 37 points and Mag Kiley (19) 36 points were successful.

Kathy Parkinson, Barb Upton, Mary-Anne Davis and Naomi Domaille all scored 34 points to lead the ball pool, while the lucky shots to the par 3s were executed by Kathy Parkinson, Barb Upton and Mary-Anne Davis.

On Saturday, Deb Watson reduced her 44 handicap by two with an impressive 40 points, with Jude Simmonds (22) on 38 points the next best.

Glenda Coulter and Mag Kiley won balls after scoring 37 points, while Olive Spitty and Barb Cadd were rewarded for accurate shots on the 5th and 11th holes respectively.

Mabel Spitty is following in the footsteps of her sister Olive, who is the club champion at Murray Downs.

Playing off a steadily reducing handicap of 21, Mabel scored 38 points on Sunday, to win ahead of Kerry Gammon (35) and Nadine Cox (41) both on 35 points.

The Spring Brooch is the next prestigious event on the calendar, and is sponsored by Holt’s, with this event starting next week with a stroke round and followed by Stableford and par events on the ensuing Wednesdays.

Points are awarded to the top 10 competitors over the three rounds.


LALBERT

ON Sunday, September 3, the club held our North West Ag Day, which was a two-person Ambrose, any combination event.

Twenty-six players took part in perfect conditions both course and weather wise, with the winning scratch team being Adam Laughlin and Glen McKissack with 65 (65/1/64).

The runners-up were Joe Kelly and “Bull” Ritchie on 72, with Joe and “Bull” also winning the handicap section with a net 66.25.

The runners-up were Chayse and Scott Worner on net 66.5, third was Jarrod Brown and Maurice Meehan on a net 67.75, fourth was Al Ferrier and Ben Smith with a net 68.25 and fifth was Col Wilkie and Luke Hatfield with a net 69.75.

The nearest the pins went to “Bull” Richie on the sixth, Brad Kelly on the eighth, while the nearest the pin second shot went to Al Ferrier.

The longest drive 1-10 was won by Glen McKissack, while Karen McKissack won the 11-27.

The club will wind up our 2023 season on September 17, with Gymkhana Day, with the presentation of club awards to follow that evening.
