MURRAY DOWNS MEN

Par competition – Thursday, July 17

WHAT a day out for Murray Downs men’s captain Mick Kiley (30) after starting on fire on the front nine with +6, before holding it together on the back nine to card an impressive +7.

The A Grade winner was Lucas Free (9) who continued his recent form to finish on +1 ahead of Doug Grant (8) with 0 and Malcolm Seton-Stewart (11) at -1.

Malcolm Talbot (17) led B Grade and finished with a wet sail to finish at +3 after making the turn even, while Steven Kerr finished second (15) on +2 and Brenten Hogan (14) third on +1.

Finishing behind Mick in C Grade was Ian Gammon (23) who performed well on +3 and Darryl Domaille (23) who also played well with +2.

Stableford – Saturday, July 19

ON a day where much of Victoria was battered by high winds, there were a few players who were able to finish with decent scores on Saturday on the windy conditions.

Colin Mewburn (13) had two birdies on his way around to finish with 41 points, consistently picking up two or three points per hole for the majority and gaining the well-deserved accolade of overall winner.

Brenton Cruickshank (7) had 78 off the stick to finish first in A Grade with 37 points and was the only player to beat his handicap in that division.

Behind Colin in B Grade was Brian Elliott (13) on 38 points and Brenton Halligan (11) was third with 35 points.

Four grades were decided on the day and Bob Burns (14) was first in C Grade with 38 points and Eugene (14) and Francois Dunn (16) filled up the remaining places, sharing 35-point results as well as their surnames.

The placegetters in D Grade played very well, with Dante Van Vuuren (30) scoring 40 points to grab first place on a countback ahead of Juandre Kapp (31) also on 40, and Zachary Haywood had (20) 35 points.

Congratulations to Gary Bailey for hitting it close on the 11th to collect the jackpot (56 centimetres).

Stableford – Sunday, July 20

TWO grades were decided on Sunday in pristine sunshine and immaculate conditions for golf.

Brenton Halligan (11) was the best of the men with 38 points, while Tim Free (14) had an impressive 37 points and Ricky Wilkins (27) and Max Carroll (18) also played well with 37 points.

Knockout Competition

THE knockout competition has reached the semi-final stage with the club winners to be decided over the next couple of months.

In the singles knockout there have been four rounds and the final four include Dale Smith, Tim Phillips, John Tripodi and James Beard.

One of the following pairings will be the winner of the 4BBB, with Scott Mathiske/Jason Perry, Noah Starrs/Lleyton McLean, Garry Foster/Andrew Guy or Max Carroll/James Downing.

Special mention to the pairing of Scott and Jason, who are the only team who have had to play three rounds to make it through to the semis.


MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

FORTY four women teed off in the par event at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club on Wednesday, with the course coming out on top after only two competitors came out on the plus side.

In Division 1, Jude Simmonds scored 2 up from her 25 handicap to win from Belinda Gardner (24) on 1 up, while in Division 2, Mandy McCallum (36) with 1 down and Di Atkin (32) with 3 down were successful.

Terri O’Callaghan’s home course is Trentham, but she has journeyed north to enjoy the sunshine and the Murray Downs course.

Terri has featured in the prize list each time she has ventured onto the course and on this occasion she led the ball pool with 2 down after a great 40 points in Sunday’s stableford event.

Jo Williams and Carolyn Zambelli were next best with 3 down, while Jo, Jenny Lynas, Glenda Coulter and Tamika Hogan were the nearest the pin winners.

Sisters-in-law Melita Sartori (33) with 35 points and Belinda Gardner (24) with 34 points were the leaders on Saturday, with golf balls going to Carol Wiseman (33 points) and both Terri O’Callaghan and Jenice Krahnert (32 points).

Dione Heppell and Barb Cadd collected the two nearest the pin prizes on offer.


MURRAY DOWNS DAD’S ARMY

ON Monday, July 21, members of Dad’s Army played the back-nine, with Kevin Maddy coming home with 19 points ahead of Tom Wilkins on 18 points to win.

Andy Millar and Ian Dickson both finished close behind on 17 points, with Gavin Scown on 16 points, Damian Kelly and Barry Bishop on 14 points following.

On Wednesday, July 23, members played the front-nine, Andy Millar, Ian Dickson, Rob Smith and Colin Hayward all finishing on 18 points.

They were followed by Tom Wilkins on 17 points, Kevin Maddy, Gavin Scown and Brian Devlin on 15 points, Damian Kelly on 14 points and John Brereton on 13 points, with the rest all finishing on 12 points and below.

The weekly winner ended in a three-way tie, Tom Wilkins, Andy Millar and Ian Dickson all finishing on 35 points.

They were followed by Kevin Maddy on 34 points, Gavin Scown on 31 points, Damian Kelly on 28 points, Rob Smith on 27 points, Barry Bishop on 26 points and Brian Devlin on 22 points.


LALBERT

THE Lalbert Golf Club held its Annual Tournament recently, commencing with a three person, any combination Ambrose event on Friday and an 18 hole stroke event on Sunday.

Friday saw 19 teams participate, with the scratch winning team of Craig Fletcher, James McLean and Dale Jager coming in with a score of 64.

The runners-up were the team of Noah, Harper and Lewis with 66, while the handicap winners were Maree Kingwill, Sarah Young and Charlie Kingwill with Nett 60.

The nearest the pin winners were Maree Kingwill (6th hole) and Nadine Cox (8th hole), while the longest drive winners were James McLean in the men’s and Kathy Parkinson in the ladies events.

On Sunday, 26 players took to the course in pleasant conditions, with the ladies scratch winner Karen McKissack with a score of 90.

The handicap winner was Maree Kingwill with Nett 76, while the runner-up was Lisa Zanker with Nett 79.

The men’s A Grade scratch winner was Dale Jager on 76, while the handicap winner was James Meehan Jnr. on Nett 73 via a countback ahead of Gavin Cambell.

The men’s B Grade scratch winner was Dwayne Scott on 77 with the handicap winner being John Ackland on Nett 68, with Kel Parsons on Nett 71 finishing as runner-up.

The ladies nearest the pins went to Karen McKissack (6th hole) and Lisa Zanker (8th hole), while the men’s nearest the pin’s went to Greg Cruickshank (6th hole) and Scott Worner (8th hole).

The longest drive was won by Karen McKissack in the ladies event and A Grade, James Meehan Jnr. in the men’s A Grade and Stuart McGregor in the men’s B Grade.

The NDGA Sandscape Championships will be held at the Lakeside Golf Club on Sunday, July 27.


NYAH WEST

ONLY a small field played last Sunday, however it mattered little as John Manser (11) had a real return to form to easily win the Stableford event with 38 points, ahead of Dennis Pretty (12) on 34 points and Allister Pretty (20) on 31 points.

Thelma Watson won the ladies event, while the nearest the pins went to Dennis Pretty on the Goodyear Autocare 2nd hole, the Nyah West Pharmacy 12th hole and the Rutherford Street Tyres 16th hole, while John Manser spoilt Dennis’s clean sweep by winning the Nutrien Ag Solutions 15th hole.

Nobody emptied the Country Tracks 4WD Swan Hill eagles nest.

Due to member illnesses and district tournaments, the junior development program has had to been suspended and will resume on Sunday, August 24 at 9.30am.
