The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

Thursday, July 24 – 4BBB Stableford

THE amazing rain over the weekend meant that the busiest day of men’s golf was Thursday for the 4BBB Stableford competition, with 44 pairs of players taking to the fairways.

Mark Warren almost scored a hole-in-one on the 11th hole, hitting his short-iron to 14 centimetres.

Dennis Kelly (22) and Joe Morrison (26) were the best of the bunch after scoring 46 points to sit alone at the top of the table, contributing evenly on the front nine to score consistently, with Dennis playing top golf on the back nine to contribute 21 points in seven holes.

The next two teams ended up on 45 points, with Tim Phillips (17) and Shaun Lawry (26) finishing second on a countback ahead of Dale Jager (7) and Craig Fletcher (9).

Dale and Craig only had two bogies on the day to blemish their card.

Saturday, July 26 – Two person Ambrose

ONLY 30 players turned up on Saturday due to the weather, which was only fit for ducks.

Each and every player would have been wet to some degree and wishing they owned a cart with all around plastics to keep them dry.

Mark Robertson (8) and Jack Cornelissen (9) closed their round with an impressive nett 63.75 in the very wet conditions and were worthy winners on the day.

Glenn Palmer (10) and Tony Miceli (16) finished three shots clear in second place (64.5) ahead of Noah Starrs (1) and Steve Bulmer (13) on 67.5.

Sunday, July 27 – Stableford

THE course played tough on Sunday with a daily difficulty rating of +3.

There was only light drizzle compared to the day before, but the conditions must have been tricky with most players struggling to score well.

Hamish Giudice (12) from Lalbert Golf Club was the only player out of the field of 35 players to beat his handicap, paring half of the holes on his way to 38 points.

Jamie Knee (27) was the nearest player on 35 points, just ahead of Shane Ingram, also on 35 points.

The rest of the field can take home the fact that the course was a brute on the day and it wasn’t just their poor form that kept them from success.

Tuesday, July 29 – Stableford

TONY Ford (20) had a nearest the pin award on the fifth hole as well as the highest stableford points on Tuesday and added another flag to his handicap record, with fours flags in the last five rounds.

While many golfers’ handicaps go backwards during the winter months, Tony seems to have found the secret, so make sure you ask him what it is next time you see him.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

MELISSA Caffrey is new to golf and on Wednesday she showed that she has lots potential after scoring 42 points from her 43 handicap to win the B grade competition ahead of Julie Overall (33) 31.

The next best score was in A grade where the ever consistent Paula Pickert (14) scored 34 points to win ahead of Carolyn Zambelli (24) on 33 points.

Julie McLennan (33 points) and Terri O’Callaghan (32 points) led the ball pool, while the nearest the pin’s went to Paula Pickert, Chris Warburton, Eilleen Willox and Di Atkin.

The weekend’s golf was interrupted by the very welcome rain.

Recent winners in Friday’s Golden Girls competition have been Jenice Krahnert (18 points) and Kaye McAlpine (16 points).

A Christmas in July event was also held, with Jenny White (16 points) winning on a countback ahead of Jenice Krahnert.

Kaye McAlpine was named the golfer of the month for July.

MURRAY DOWNS DAD’S ARMY

ON Monday, July 28, members of Dad’s Army played the back-nine in inclement conditions, with Robert Smith (17 points) and Kevin Maddy (15 points) finishing as the only players with a score above 12 points.

On Wednesday, July 30, members played the front-nine in better conditions, with Barry Ingram finishing with 17 points to lead the field.

Tom Wilkins and Ian Dickson both finished on 14 points, with Barry Bishop and Gavin Scown scoring 13 points and the rest all scoring 12 points and below.

The weekly winner was Rob Smith with 28 points and was closely followed by Kevin Maddy on 27 points, Barry Ingram on 26 points, Barry Bishop on 25 points, Brian Devlin on 21 points and Colin Hayward on 17 points.

The monthly winner for July was Kevin Maddy on 135 points, with Kevin taking home the tin of fruit, while the runner up was Rob Smith on 123 points.
