THE Murray River flood peak is expected to reach Swan Hill on Sunday, but is not thought to pose any serious threat.
Its arrival has been estimated by the Weather Bureau on records of flood travel time from Echuca – normally nine days.
But river watch authorities are puzzled that the Murray is not rising faster at Swan Hill.
It has been fairly steady at minor flood level of 4.50m most of this week and yesterday morning was 4.51m.
The reduced impact might be the result of the volume of water bypassing Swan Hill through the Edward and Wakool Rivers, both of which were rising yesterday.
Downstream, the Murray below Wakool Junction was also rising and a slow rise was occurring further down at Boundary Ben.
The Loddon peak is moving through the Fish Point and Pental Island towards Swan Hill.
Yesterday morning it was reported to be running quite high but quietly and without danger.
“I think the levees can accommodate it in a moderate flood situation,” Fish Point dairyfarmer Jack Davies said.
Sandbags not used in the Kerang area have been taken to Benjeroop as a safeguard.
State Emergency Service regional officer Janes Gustus has again asked landholders along the rivers to keep a close watch on levee banks in their area to ensure their safety.
