Long V8 wait over

FOR the first time in over 10 years, the V8 Trucks return to Sonic Speedway on Saturday.

It will be an entertaining night of racing with the state title for GP Midgets up for grabs and the 25 Sports Sedans in the penultimate round of their series.

Anybody that has never seen the V8 Trucks race is in for a treat.

They are amazingly fast and spectacular to watch.

Luke James has been virtually unbeatable, however he will face plenty of opposition from ex-Sprint Car driver Steven Hateley in the “Towmater” and the very competitive Fletcher Mills.

Also racing will be 70-year-old Wes Bell and Tim Driller in his first time here.

GP Midgets run 1000cc bike motors with a rear spoiler, meaning they are very fast.

Multiple state title holders with be in attendance, including Shawn Ward, Jenelle Seville and Gary Bowyer.

Local David Bacon returns to his old home track, while relatively new drivers Terry Brown and Matt Kamolins have put plenty of pressure on the more experienced drivers.

Drivers will be desperate for points in the Sports Sedan series, with all top 10 places separated by only a few points.

Zac Swanson heads in as the leader, having overtaken Felicity Roycroft, with Caleb Lincoln sitting a close third.

There will be a few locals racing with Scott Bull in good form until an unfortunate encounter with the wall last meeting, while Zoey Salau has been busy juggling racing in two or three classes and is always competitive.

Standard Saloons is wide open.

Of locals, Hayden Glare has been racing in Queensland, Josh Campbell ran at the Victorian Title and has been in good form, Troy Higgins had his first race for the season last meeting and Kiel Tripcony has his first race for the season.

They will take on Ballarat drivers Austin and Lachie Chilvers, Ian and Patrick Walsh and Brad Sheppard.

Formula 500s numbers have been boosted by the return of Terry Knowles and the debut of Claude Pearson in a move away from Standards.

Tom Nietvelt will be keen to greet the chequered flag first again after a great night’s racing last meeting.

He will face competition from the ever-improving Jordan Caddy (second last meeting), Jess Bedggood and the consistent Malcolm Gammon.

With last meeting’s winner and runner-up not nominating, Juniors is wide open.

Blake Adam had three-thirds last meeting, while Jacob Tinworth and Levi Blake will be looking for podium finishes.

Racing starts at 5pm with trackside parking for early arrivals and a grassed seating area to watch from.

Hot and cold food and drinks are available from our well-stocked canteen.

Remember, we are a cash-only track.

If you are there early enough, you can wander through the plus and check out the cars and drivers.

You may even get to sit in a Lightning Mini Sprint and get a poster or two from them. Our mascot Sonic will be there for the kids.
