Wildlife breeding in paddocks

OJD information day

OVINE Johne’s Disease is a mongrel disease that kills your sheep from the inside out.

The gut lining slowly thickens and eventually the food goes in, the poop comes out but your sheep do not absorb any of the nutrients.

The sheep virtually starves to death in a paddock of feed. One injection at marking time gives a lifetime of protection.

But at over $3 a shot, you have to get it right. This vaccine is also nasty stuff if you inject yourself, so you have to be careful.

Our Local Land Service (LLS) is running a free information day to talk about when to call a vet and what happens when you do. How can you use biosecurity to reduce the risk to your flock? And how can you manage OJD if it is diagnosed.

Our LLS vets will be accompanied by the producers of the Gudair vaccine, who will present tips and tricks to use the vaccine safely and efficaciously.

Presenters are Linda Seale and Katelyn Braine, our LLS district veterinarians, as well as Heidi Sutherland, Zoetis senior sales representative for livestock for Central Victoria. It’s at Moulamein Bowling Club on June 7. If you want afternoon tea, the day starts at 3pm and the free workshop will be from 3.30pm until 5.30pm. For more information, call or text Linda on 0427 629 740.

Successful flu jab day

OUR Community Health Centre recently had their well-attended flu jab day.

This is a great service for our district. Our health centre is still trying to negotiate more days to be open and hopes to make an announcement very soon.

Their op shop has enough jeans at the moment but is always looking for winter clothing at this time of the year.

If you need some cheap jeans, call in and grab some. They are always looking for more volunteers to help out if you have a bit of spare time. Call Fran on 0498 975 949 for more information.

More than just livestock breeding

I HAVE been sent some photos by one of our local farmers of what is happening on his farm.

He managed to get a photo of a broad shelled turtle laying its eggs, as well as a family of Perons tree frogs that live in a strainer post on his farm. Old Boy’s Day Out this weekend

THE Moulamein Football Netball Club has invited all past and present players of our Mighty Swans Old Boy’s Day Out.

This great event will be happening tomorrow when we play Ultima at home. All past and present players are invited to this great day.

I think there is a free spit roast for lunch for them. I know they all get a free feed. Drinks will be available at bar prices. This great event will kick off at 12 noon and there will also be guest speakers.

If you would like to come over, call Jody on 0408 182 610 or Travis on 0427 332 610 to book in.

RSVP is a must so they know how many sheep to put on the spit. Looking forward to seeing you there. There are heaps booked in so it will be a day to remember. Or a day you try too remember if you get mixed up with the wrong old mate.

River levels

THE Edward at Moulamein has started to rise this week.

Our Edward is now at around 1800 megalitres a day and almost 1.8 metres. Our mighty Billabong has plenty of water on the way with over 2000 megs at the top and still rising. There is no such thing as a flash flood in our Billabong Creek, though. It takes a month to get here so our Edward will stay up just because of our Billabong for at least a month or more. No flash flood but our Edward will be rising very quickly in the next week.

Please check you boats as well as anything else you may have in the water.
