Going solo on an AFL tipping win

Ben was a winner

LOCAL identity Ben Pearse thought it was pretty good to take out the Moulamein Bowling Club’s AFL tipping competition and pick up a couple of hundred bucks or so.

Then, he started to get text messages that he had won the national competition.

Ben had entered at the start of the season and had never given it much thought.

They wanted his banking details so they could put the prize money into it as Ben had won on a countback.

Give us your details and we will give you $50,000.

“Yeah right,” Ben thought. “Another rip-off.”

Eventually the bank details were given and bugger me, $50,000 turned up in Ben’s account.

Ben gave it some thought and decided to take $40,000 off the house loan and have $10,000 to play with.

One of his mates pointed out that “the old Ben would have paid $10,000 off his house and taken the $40,000 to play with”.

Ben just replied, “Yep, but that would just kill the new Ben.”

Well done, Ben. The only photo I could get of the new Ben was after a rice meeting in the morning at our bowling club. After stirring up our manager about opening the bar when she walked in, and she did. He had to buy something.

This is probably the only photo of Ben drinking Solo in a bar that will ever be taken. Well done, Ben. Your team did well until the grand final.

60 years of the Koolamein Cup

WE played our mates from Wakool last Saturday in bowls for the Koolamein Cup.

We only noticed after the presentation that it has been going for 60 years. That could have been a reason for a bigger day.

The day was well attended with 15 from Wakool and 14 from Moulamein. With one short, it was decided that we would have one of our teams just have two bowlers that got three bowls each. Pretty harmless we thought.

Rooster and Gary were these two and they were on fire all day. We had three rounds of eight ends for the day.

Moulamein was up after the first round. Wakool was up after the second round. It came down to the third round, and Moulamein were able to claim the cup back off the Wakool Wakers.

We get to hold onto this prized cup that was handmade 60 years ago for 12 months. Then we go to Wakool and try and bring it home again, it’s always good fun against this mob.

Rice going in

IT has started. Drill sown rice as well as plenty of urea going into the ground.

Water has started to flow across the paddocks and from now it will be full on after the rain.

Get it in and keep throwing money at it until it goes green.

Southern Bell Frogs in the town lake

MY young fellow was jogging around our Moulamein Lake the other evening when he spotted a Southern Bell Frog sitting on the walking track.

Mind you, if I was jogging around the lake, I would be seeing pink elephants and all kinds of stuff. But he is a bit fitter than me.

They are big and green and very jumpy. I saw a couple tonight when I was driving around in the rain.

They are not so rare around Moulamein, just hard to spot.

Murrumbidgee hits 50 per cent

WE are now on 50 per cent water allocation in the Murrumbidgee system.

I know it is hard to work out why with the rivers and weirs being like they are, but that is how it works in our Murrumbidgee system.

The weirs have to fill. We use some of the water. Then they have to fill again to get our 100 per cent.

We are on supplementary water and will be until about Christmas by the look of it. I keep saying, if this is global warming, bring it on.

Gallery photo competition

THE galleries 2022 categories have been announced. Time to get your camera out and get clicking.

The open section theme is “red”. The black and white section is “geometric shapes”. I will have to look that one up in the dictionary before I take a photo.

They also have a kid’s section. The 12 and under section is “focus on Moulamein”.

Entries close October 21 and the winners will be announced at 5pm on October 27.

There is $700 up for grabs in prize money. For more information, call Kathy on 0428 875 137 or Sandy on 0422 849 562.

Trivia night

THE Moulamein Public School is running a trivia night on October 14 at the Moulamein Bowling Club.

For $25, you get an Aussie finger food dinner as well as a lot of fun. Tables are a maximum of eight and it will be all Australian-themed questions and dress up. To book, call the school on 5887 5208.

Moulamein Gourmet Fare

THIS will be held at the Moulamein Bowling Club from 2pm tomorrow.

There will be plenty of local stalls during the day and then there will be live music by local Ian Tully after the fare.

The first time we tried this day we were just coming out of lockdown due to our mate COVID.

There were limited numbers allowed into our bowling club and the line up outside you would never see in Moulamein unless I was shouting a free beer.

I had to do something on the microphone that I had never done before. I had to ask people to leave. Not because they were misbehaving, but just so the next mob of people could get in for a look. For more information or to put a stall in, call Courtney on 5887 5207.

Rain forecast again

AT the time of writing, we are going to get wet again this week. Very wet if the forecast is right.

This is our fourth week of shearing. No, we are not a big station, it is just hard to get dry sheep to get a go at them.

We got a day in today and we have a full shed for tomorrow, then we have to find a way to get the crutching done. I love the rain. Just hope the flies do not hit us after the rain.

River levels

THE Edward at Moulamein is sitting on around 4.7 metres and around 9200 megalitres a day at the time of writing and has stayed at that for the past few days.

With rain forecast for the whole of eastern Australia, this could make it interesting with Dartmouth now spiling and every other weir being at over 95 per cent. Watch this space.
