Moulamein Notes

IT has come to the pointy end of the Moulamein Bowling Club men’s and women’s club singles championship.

This great wind-up to find out the best two players will be happening tonight at 5pm if anyone would like to come over for a look.

Come over, grab a beer and check out the talent of Moulamein Bowling Club.

We have Doreen against Kerryn in the women’s final and Mark against Dennis in the men’s final.

If the games are close, they will last up to two hours.

Happy hour starts at 5.30pm and the meat raffles start about 8pm.

The bus will take you home after a great night.

Airfield possibly for sale

I DO not know how our Murray River Council’s meeting went, but one of the many things up for sale could be the Moulamein airfield.

This week’s council meeting agenda listed a confidential-matters discussion about a recommendation for the sale of five council-owner lots, referred to as Moulamein Aerodrome.

One of the things that Transgrid said in one of their earlier reports was that our airfield would be safe under the transmission line project.

They also said that they would be at least 4km from our town.

Going by some of the property owners they have visited north of Moulamein, they could be as close as 1.5km from our post office in town. If they go out a bit further north, they could go across our airstrip.

Maybe Transgrid is going to buy the airfield and have their workers fly-in fly-out while they pollute our district with steel and wires to build this.

More rain

AT the time of writing, it is trying its hardest to rain again.

We copped almost 40mm in town last week and there was 25mm to 30mm forecast out of this rain event.

It must have something to do with global warming.

Precision rice growing

WITH the weather being so cold this year while we are trying to get our rice crops established, water levels have been crucial.

We drop the levels below minimum to try and get the rice to stand up and look green.

We cannot leave the water off for long as it can stress the plants and encourage a second or third generation of weeds to grow.

Put the water level back up to minimum and you have very watery rice and thousands of ducks making our crops their home.

Get 20mm or 30mm on minimum levels and the crop is just water again but the ducks are still happy and the turbo chooks can still run through it.

We are one of the lucky ones that have got most of the rice along the road up and looking greenish.

Around the back where the ducks like to land it is a bit different story.

Ducks are even pulling out established plants in places.

We just need that week or two of hot weather to get what rice we have left up and going as if we resow.

That would encourage more ducks to come back in for a feed of fresh rice seed.

Children’s art exhibition

THE art gallery hosted an art exhibition by Moulamein Public School this week.

There was a great roll-up for the opening and the students’ artworks will be up until the end of next week.

There is some great work there.

We have some very talented children at the school by the look of the quality of the work.

Well done, and well done to the gallery for guiding the children to do such great work.

Bowls season

DIVISION 1 team had a good win with two rinks up, one down, up overall.

Division 3 had a battle at home with one rink up and two rinks down. Down overall.

This week, both teams head to Racecourse on the bus. Mark has volunteered to drive.

This will be the first trip away together.

It will be worth going just for the bus ride.

River levels

THE Edward River is staying level and is still sitting at about 2200 megalitres per day and about 2.1 metres.

I will have a better fishing report next week when the cod season opens. Just remember, please do the right thing as the fisheries mob are bound to be checking out our local rivers once the cod season opens.

Just like duck shooting on the rice. If we all do the right thing, nothing to see here officer and everyone is happy.
