Moulamein notes

Finals spot cemented

After another great win, our senior footy team have cemented their spot in the finals.

Our A and B Grade netballers have also made it to the finals. Moulamein will host a final on August 24. We have three teams in it, and will need extra help on the day.

We need plenty of help to host any final, but with three teams involved in it, we need extra help as a lot of our great volunteers will be playing.

If you can give a couple of hours or a cake or something, please put your hand up so the organisers do not have to make a million phone calls to get help and donations.

You do not have to serve people, if you are not into that. There will be a full-time job stacking fridges and putting chips into buckets. If you put your hand up, you will be given a job.

Footy/netball is in Hay on Saturday, and our three teams play at home on Sunday. Hope to see you there.

September classic in August

This is our gold letter event for our Moulamein Bowling Club.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the September Classic is now held in the last weekend of August. I could explain why, but it would take too long. Positions have almost filled for this great two days of bowls, so ring Kerryn asap if you want a spot.

We are also super excited that we are going to have The Bowls Broadcast joining us on Sunday.

You can see live coverage of the last couple of games, as well as the finals. (I’m sure it will be riveting viewing for our wives). Because I am an old fella, I cannot tell you how to tune into the live telecast at the time of writing. By next week, I may know how.

Get in quick. Spots have almost filled, and we always need a couple of spares just in case.

More water

Everyone has had an increase in their water rights, except our Crow Eating mates. They are still stuck on their 100 per cent.

After our NSW Murray mates got their 100 per cent increase last month, to go from 1 per cent to 2 per cent, they may be a bit disappointed this time to only get a 50 per cent increase, equating to three per cent of what they own.

Those on the Murrumbidgee are lucky, they’re up to 19 per cent and have just enjoyed three days of off quota water. Thanks to those in charge for that, and we have another three days coming in two or three weeks.

Our mates over the border on the Vic Murray are now up to 53 per cent of their high security water. Everyone got an increase, except the Crow Eaters.

We had better do something about that.

Things you find

We have been clearing out the old house at Koolabong where I grew up.

I made the mistake of telling my grandson that there may be a collection of footy cards there.

Every time he visited, he’d ask “Have you found those cards yet China Pop?”

Finally, I found them – not where I thought they would be – but I did put them there more than 30 years ago.

He looked at them.

I explained to him that if he sells them, he has to share the few bucks with his sisters.

He did not recognise any of the players, so he lost interest.

My daughter googled 1973 bubble gum footy cards. The advice was: Do not let your kids touch these cards. Go and buy a plastic folder card holder and put them into it now.

Evidently, 1973 footy cards are very collectable.

There are a few names I recognise; Royce Hart, Denis Pagan and a few more in the 52-card collection.

The grandkids may do okay out of this lost find and get a good holiday or a new bike each.

I had better look harder as I clear out.

I found my matchbox collection.

I had better check out the value of them before I throw them out.

Did anyone else collect matchboxes when they were a kid?

Pigeon update

We have got to the pointy end of the Moulamein Bowling Club pigeon racing group.

We have had a few trials and unfortunately, we lost four out of our 12 starters.

This still gives us eight chances to take home the gold.

By the time you read this, the race will be over.

This is a 300km test of speed, stamina and instinct.

They should have started around 9am from Wycheproof, depending on the weather.

Watch this space for more details.

River levels

The Edward had a bit of a rise coming down, but it has started to drop.

The Edward is now at 1.3 metres and just under 1000 megs a day.

It will continue to drop slowly this week.

There’s no fishing report. I have to get out more to find out what is biting.

The Niemur River has a good flush going down it at the moment. It’s more than 400 megs at the Moulamein-Barham Road.

This could be worth throwing a line in, if you’re up this way.
