Eagles continue dominant run

BALRANALD v MALLEE EAGLES

AN 18-goal to six first quarter helped the Mallee Eagles stretch their unbeaten start to the season to six games, with a dominant 27-goal win over Balranald on Saturday.

After a slow start, the Roos showed plenty of character after quarter time, but were ultimately no match for the Eagles in the 62-35 result.

It was another strong performance from the premiership favourites, with Mallee Eagles co-coach Alicia Harvey proud of her team and their four quarter performance post-match.

“The game ebbed and flowed, but I felt we didn’t lose our intensity for the whole 60 minutes,” Harvey said.

“Credit to Balranald, they had some beautiful passages of play and utilised their rolling subs well to their advantage.

“I felt the scoreboard didn’t reflect the games intensity in that respect, we never really felt comfortable with whatever lead we had and we had to work really hard to maintain momentum.

“Our shooters moved and shot accurately, our midcourters were speedy and had excellent use of channels and our defenders had hands to everything.”

Ava Mccombe made her A grade debut for the Eagles at wing defence, while Lily Brennan and Nevaeh Roberts were the visitors better players, while Emmerson Schoenberg returned for the Roos at goal attack and was Balranald’s best on court.

COHUNA v KERANG

KERANG joined the Mallee Eagles in continuing their unbeaten start to the season with a strong 16-goal win over an injury hit Cohuna Kangas on Saturday.

A first quarter injury to Cohuna goal attack Carla Walker caused early havoc for the home team, with Walker taken from the game with concussion in the opening minutes.

From there, the Kangas were forced to reshuffle their team, with Carly Geary moving into attack for the remainder of the match, leaving Cohuna vulnerable down back in the 52-36 result.

Katelyn Wright was among the Blues better players, along with Madison Hall and Maddy Black, with Kerang coach Chloe Adams pleased with her team’s four quarter performance.

“We knew it was going to be a high intensity game as Cohuna always come out fighting, but we were able to steadily pull away each quarter and had a pretty strong third quarter which set us up for the last,” Adams said.

“Cohuna definitely pushed us and were hungry all game, but our girls stayed composed and adjusted well when it mattered.

“There’s definitely lots for us to work on, we are still searching for that full four quarter effort, but overall I was really happy to come away with a good win.”

Cohuna coach Georgia Anderson was also pleased with her team’s effort, despite not getting the result on the scoreboard, singling out Tanner Edwards and Lilly Guerin as her better players.

“I think Kerang are tough in goals and our defence really took it up to them,” Anderson said.

“We are so hungry and our intensity is so high, plus our fitness and ability, we are really great to watch and I know we’re a hard opponent.

“We just need to capitalise every chance.”

TYNTYNDER v NNW UNITED

TYNTYNDER have broken through for their first win of the season, with the Bulldogs defeating Nyah-Nyah West United by 17 goals on the weekend.

The 54-37 result sees the Demons remain on the bottom of the ladder, along with Lake Boga, as the only clubs yet to record a win in 2025.

Saturday proved to be a tough day at the office for NNW United, who after outscoring Tyntynder 14-goals to six in the opening quarter, were unable to maintain their advantage after losing Madison Jones to injury.

The Bulldogs proved unstoppable after the first break, outscoring the Demons 46-23 over the final 45 minutes, with Tyntynder co-coach Bridget Dedini ecstatic to record her team’s first win of the season.

“We were obviously very stoked with the win, we had a bit of a slow start but regrouped at quarter time,” Dedini said.

“I was very impressed with the way we got ourselves out of the slump in the end.”

WOORINEN v LAKE BOGA

THE inclusion of premiership shooter Sarah Hepburn almost saw Lake Boga record their first win of the season, with the Magpies eventually going down by 10 goals to Woorinen on the weekend.

After a strong start, Lake Boga were overran by the third placed Tigers, with the 55-45 final score seeing the Tigers maintain third place on the ladder.

Hepburn was instrumental for the Magpies and provided a strong target in the circle, finishing with 35 goals.

It wasn’t enough, however, with the Tigers holding strong in their own attacking end with Tayla Bennett scoring a game high 38 goals.

It was a pleasing result for Woorinen, with Bennett praising her defence for their hard work.

“It was a good contest for our defence who worked hard all game,” the Woorinen co-coach said.

“The balls that we did turnover became very crucial and making sure that we scored from those opportunities.

“It was also a game that displayed lots of young talent across both teams.

“We had lots of good passages of play but also know that in the back of our mind we will need to work on some things heading into the coming weeks.”

Chloe Militto and Violet Martine were the best for Woorinen, while Montana Davies produced a strong four quarter performance for Lake Boga.
