Central Murray Round 8 Netball Match Reports

COHUNA v TOOLEYBUC-MANANGATANG

A DOMINANT display from Tooleybuc-Manangatang shooter Zoe Morris has seen the Saints upstage the Cohuna Kangas with a four-goal win on the weekend.

Morris proved to be the difference in the 56 to 52 result, with her height and accuracy ensuring Tooleybuc-Manangatang recorded their second win of the season.

While the Saints remain in eighth on the Central Murray A Grade ladder, they now find themselves just one win behind fifth placed Cohuna.

Tooleybuc-Manangatang’s defensive pressure all over the court proved too much for the Kangas to handle, with Cohuna coach Georgia Anderson finding the positives from the result after the match.

“I was very happy with our defensive work, we were very strong but made too many turnovers,” Anderson said post-match.

“We probably made a few too many errors in our attack end again unfortunately.

“Overall we’re still feeling positive, we know we’re a solid unit and we have hardly had a full side yet, we just have to keep plugging away.”

Along with Morris, the Saints were also well served by midcourter Jayda Plant, while with wing defence Lilly Guerin and goal attack Tanner Edwards the best for Cohuna.

BALRANALD v LAKE BOGA

REIGNING premiers Lake Boga have recorded their first win of the season thanks to a dominant second half, with the Magpies running away with an 11-goal win at Greenham Park on the weekend.

It was the Magpies’ first win under new coach Lisa Ryan, with Milla Holt shooting 45 of her teams goals in the 58-47 result.

Holt was one of many standouts for the Magpies, who outscored the Roos 31-goals to 23 after half time in the runaway win.

It was a proud moment for Ryan, with her side finally producing a four quarter performance that has been several weeks in the making following strong games against Cohuna and Woorinen in recent weeks.

“It was a really great game by our girls, with consistency and accuracy on goal really helping us get across the line,” Ryan said.

“We made a small tweak to the line up, along with some set plays and game strategy, which helped with continuity and ease down the court.

“Our goalers’ run, pass and shot were all excellent, our defenders clogged up the ring and caused turnovers and our midcourt youngsters with plenty of run are getting better at positioning and passing accuracy.”

Macy Lloyd was named best on court for Balranald, who would be left to rue their missed opportunity as a victory would have seen them climb into the top five following Cohuna’s loss to the Saints.

“It was a disappointing result, but credit to (Lake) Boga, they played a great game and have lots of young talent coming through,” Balranald coach Elli-Jane Pollard said post-match.

“They came out strong and were able to capitalise on our errors, but there’s lots of things to take away from the game and work on over the next few weeks.”

NNW UNITED v MALLEE EAGLES

THE Mallee Eagles have continued their unbeaten start to the season, defeating a competitive Nyah-Nyah West United by 20 goals on Saturday.

Going into the match as red-hot favourites, the Eagles opened up an ominous eight-goal lead at quarter time, before the home side rallied after the break to be outscored by just one goal.

The ladder leaders then reasserted their control in the third term, before going on to record a comfortable 54-34 win.

While the Eagles will go into the King’s Birthday bye on top of the ladder, Mallee co-coach Alicia Harvey was impressed by what she saw from the winless Demons, with the final score far from a true reflection on the match.

“The intensity was high the whole game from both teams and by no means did we feel comfortable with whatever lead we had throughout the match,” Harvey said.

“Credit to NNW United, I honestly thought they had one of the hardest to penetrate full court defensive presses we’ve been up against this year.

“Regardless of where they (NNW United) are on the ladder, we have always matched up really well against them over the years, so we knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game by any means from the start.

“Our attacking end responded very well to their strength and height in defence and we were able to convert our turnovers and played really smart, basic possession netball.

“But it was our defence that turned it up, with hands to absolutely every loose ball or rebound in that ring against some very dominant, smart goalies.”

Jemma Meehan and Nevaeh Roberts were the better players for the Mallee Eagles, while defender Gretchen Skinner was best for the Demons.

TYNTYNDER v KERANG

A 17-goal to five third quarter has helped Kerang record their eighth straight victory to start the season, with the Blues defeating Tyntynder 44-31 on the weekend.

The Blues managed to overcome a slow start, which saw them trailing by three goals at half time, with Kerang’s defence restricting the Bulldogs to just 10 goals for the entire second half of the match.

Chloe Adams and Madd Black were instrumental in the final result after half time, with the Bulldogs’ midcourt struggling to penetrate their goal ring in the second half.

“We actually were pretty happy with the game overall,” Tyntynder co-coach Bridget Dedini said post-match.

“Our first half was really strong, but we just had a big lapse of concentration in the third quarter which against quality opponents, is very exposing.

“Overall we were happy with our individual performances and how we remained positive as a team.”
