FIRE crews were put to the test on Saturday, as they worked through extreme weather to contain a number of spot fires along the Calder Highway.

A faulty wheel bearing on a trailer was responsible for starting the fire, which ignited at six spots along an 11km stretch of highway, between Sea Lake and Pier Milan.
