BYSTANDERS who attempt a rescue are at a higher risk of drowning themselves during December, alarming new figures have revealed.

According to Life Saving Victoria (LSV) research, 28 people have drowned while attempting a rescue since 2000, with a quarter of these incidents occurring during December.
