Fire threat ‘extreme’, says CFA

THE CFA has warned people to be prepared for "extreme" fire danger on Friday, declaring a total fire ban.

Extreme fire conditions have been forecast, with maximum temperatures in the low to mid 40s across the Mallee.

On Thursday the Bureau of Meteorology forecast 41 degrees in Swan Hill with showers and a possible storm.

The forecast is for an even hotter Mildura, with a maximum of 44 degrees and becoming windy.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said the ban had been declared due to the expected conditions across the Mallee and Wimmera regions.

“Conditions will be extreme with some parts of the Mallee near catastrophic,” Mr Heffernan said.

“The weather conditions are dynamic with wind gusts of up to 60km/h. There is a high likelihood of severe thunderstorms with the potential for lightning.”

A total fire ban means no fire can be lit in the open air or allowed to remain alight from 12.01am to 11.59pm.

“We’re asking people to follow the strict conditions associated with the TFB declaration,” Mr Heffernan said.

“Understand how the increased fire risk will impact you and ensure your fire plan covers all possible contingencies.”
