Balranald river peak on the way

THE Murrumbidgee River at Balranald is expected to peak this week.

An update from the Bureau of Meteorology issued on Sunday stated that the Murrumbidgee River at Balranald Weir downstream could reach about 7.30 metres on Wednesday, after originally thinking it would reach around 7.1 metres in early December.

“Obviously there has been a fair bit of rain we have had in the past few weeks, and the Murrumbidgee River has had several peaks – it has moved from Wagga and then downstream through Narrandera, Darlington Point, and has made its way currently to Hay,” NSW SES public information officer Brett Koschel said.

“That water will now make its way downstream to Balranald.”

However, there was no immediate flood threat to the township.

“In the last week, for Balranald itself, we have only seen a handful of requests for assistance, but the unit out that way supports kind of further west, so they have had a few more jobs around that Euston-Kyalite-Goodnight area,” Mr Koschel said.

Mr Koschel reminded locals that while the town should remain dry, lower areas outside could become isolated as the water rose, and encouraged residents to keep a close eye on the latest river levels and prepare their properties as much as they could.

If you need assistance, call the SES on 132 500.
