THE NSW SES has issued a prepare-to-evacuate warning for Moulamein township as the rising Edward River threatens to isolate the community.

Rural Fire Service captain Alesha Buckley told The Guardian her team were working extremely hard to maintain the levees protecting the town, but the roads outside the levee were at significant risk.

“Currently our road to Pretty Pine is cut off, we’ve got water over numerous roads around the area,” Ms Buckley said.

“Council are working really hard to try and keep the road open between Moulamein and Barham.

“At this stage we are not looking like we will lose our power, our sewerage or our town water supply – the Murray River Council and the RFS are pretty confident about that at this stage.”

The NSW SES is directing people in Moulamein to evacuate before 2pm Tuesday. An evacuation centre has been set up at Deniliquin Basketball Centre.

People wishing to evacuate under escort will have the opportunity at 1pm Tuesday, from the RFS station on Turora Street.

The Edward River at Moulamein was sitting at a major flood level of 6.12 metres.

“It is predicted that it will reach near 6.2m tomorrow with renewed rises likely,” Ms Buckley said.

Despite feeling somewhat “exhausted” from the past few weeks, Ms Buckley she was feeling confident heading into the next week.

“I’m confident with the workers, the teamwork and everything on the ground,” she said.

“We had crews from Western Australia and Tasmania here the other day, so they are flying in from everywhere to help us, which is amazing. But even just the locals stepping up to help, it is just so great in a small community.

“We’ve even had people travel from two hours away to come and help us fill sandbags.”

Ms Buckley said people needing assistance should call the SES 132 500 number.

“It helps us prioritise where we need to put people,” she said.

“It’s great that we have people coming to the RFS shed asking for a hand, but we need that paper trail to follow.”
