Speewa Ferry service still running

AS the water keeps rising in the Murray River, one crossing that will be able to keep operating for a bit longer is the Speewa Ferry.

The ferry, which first started operating by being hand-winched back in 1904, is located 20 km north of Swan Hill, taking vehicles back and forth from Victoria to NSW daily.

Speewa Ferry master Steve Shields said the ferry would do 80 to 100 crossings a day, with mostly locals and tradies seeming to utilise it.

He also told The Guardian the mounting flood water had not seemed to affect the traffic.

“There are more people just coming to the gate and having a look though, but they don’t go on the ferry,” he said.

Mr Shields was confident the ferry could keep running for a while longer.

“We can just adjust the cables and all of that to suit the height of the water,” Mr Shields said.

“But if it gets up too much higher we will have to stop probably because we will run out of cable to run it.”

The ferry is controlled by Transport for NSW and is one of only two ferries that crosses the Murray River along the Victorian and NSW border.

The Speewa Ferry is free to use and runs every day between 8am and 8.30pm.
