PEOPLE are being warned to avoid contact with the Murray River at Murray Downs after high levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae were detected on Friday.

The WaterNSW red alert warning applies only to untreated water, and will remain in place until monitoring and test results confirm that the risk is sufficiently diminished.
