Robinvale on alert for vigilantes after attack

ROBINVALE police are concerned about vigilantes after a teen was struck to the head in a vicious, unprovoked attack on Sunday.

Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Deckert said a 13-year-old was walking along the Ronald Street and Cleary Drive intersection about 7pm on October 24 when was struck from behind on the head.

“The victim momentarily lost consciousness, falling to the ground where he remained unaided until regaining consciousness,” he said.

“He made his way home where police was contacted.

“The victims injuries are not life threatening and he sustained a concussion.

“Theft was not a motivation in this crime, the offender did not speak or call out to the young victim, and the victim did not see anybody in the area prior to being attacked.”

Two men, aged 25 and 19, have since been arrested and charged with affray and serious assault offences.

One has been bailed and the other remanded.

Sen-Sgt Deckert said police were appealing for witnesses to come forward to assist in investigations.

“It could have (resulted in death), and the fact it was a random kid jogging home and attacked without provocation is very concerning obviously for the local community,” he said.

He said a second violent assault happened where “people surmised who my have been involved”.

Sen-Sgt Deckert said local police were concerned about vigilante behaviour as a result of the assaults.

“We have intervened and kept parties that we are aware of at ease,” he said.

“Obviously we want to provide some community reassurance as well.

“We are getting on top of it, put extra patrols on the area, and if anyone knows anything more than we are happy to follow up and deal with people causing this.”

If you witnessed or have any information call Leading Senior Constable Cassidy at the Robinvale police station on 5026 3002.
