Women, youth chase first wins

The Swan Hill Soccer League’s women’s and youth boys teams will both be chasing their first wins of their Bendigo Amateur Soccer League seasons at the Ken Harrison Reserve on Sunday.

The youth boys will be after their first victory of the season when they host Shepparton United SC from 11.30am, with the women’s match against Kyneton District SC to follow at 1.30pm.

It will be a big occasion for both teams, with the youth boys in particular unlucky to have not already broken through when they last played at home, after going down to Castlemaine Goldfields FC 2-1 a fortnight ago.

The women’s team will be hoping to continue their improvement shown in last Saturday’s 5-1 loss to highly fancied Golden City, with women’s captain Sarah Scott telling The Guardian that her team is on the right track.

“The end result last week probably wasn’t a true reflection on the game I felt, we were in it all the way up until the last 10 or 15 minutes, but we just let them (Golden City) score a couple of easy goals late,” Scott said.

“Our effort was much better and if we keep working with that same intensity, we’ll continue to improve.

“From where we started to where we are now is already a stark improvement, we know we’re getting closer to a win and if we play like we did last weekend then who knows what can happen.

“Our focus is on just doing the basics right and continuing to improve.”

The women’s team will be missing midfielder Heidi Annand for their all-important clash with Kyneton, with Kimberley Patterson, Kayla Chrisp and Sophie Fasham all returning to the line-up to help strengthen all three lines.

Also in action will Swan Hill’s two under 16 teams, with both the boys and girls teams to play a double-header against Spring Gully at Stanley Avenue in Bendigo on w morning.

While the under-16 boys, like the women and youth teams, are still chasing their first win, the under-16 girls team are proving to be one of their competitions leading contenders, with two wins and a draw from their four matches seeing them comfortably sit third on the ladder and four points inside the top four.

Tomorrow’s match with Spring Gully Renegades will be there toughest challenge to date, with their opponents sitting on top of the ladder and undefeated, with a plus 40 goal difference.

The Swan Hill men’s team, who sit on top of the BASL division 2 men’s ladder, have the bye.
