Junior Flyers soar

IT was a successful weekend both on and off the court for the Swan Hill Basketball Association, which held their annual Junior Tournament across the weekend.

The Flyers junior program had 14 teams competing across the 15 divisions, with six teams ending as their division champions.

Swan Hill cleaned up in the under-14 girls competition, winning both the division 1 and division 2 titles, defeating the Echuca Pirates by one-point in division 1 and 18 points in division 2.

Scarlet Grey scored 27 points to lead the girls under-18 Flyers team to the title, defeating the Gators by 19 points, while a 12 point game from Miela Roberts helped see the Flyers under-16 girls team defeat Echuca 34 to 21.

Under-12 boys and under-14 boys both had success in division 1, with Wilhem Foott scoring 20 points in the final to lead the under-12’s team to a 16-point win over the Deniliquin Giants, with the under-14 boys claiming a heart stopping four-point win over the Mildura Heat – 33 to 29.

An army of volunteers ensured a smooth show was run across the two-day event.

“Both the under-16 and under-18 girls went through undefeated, which was an amazing achievement,” Flyers under-18 girls coach Adam Kerr told The Guardian.

“They both won their grand finals convincingly, which was really good, especially for the 18’s as we only had seven players for the weekend.

“We struggled for numbers a bit and both Indi Grey and Ava Crow were pretty beaten up on Saturday night, but they both got through the semi-finals pretty well and then had a great grand final against Shepparton.

“Our under-16’s beat Echuca by a little bit less and then our under-14’s girls won both the division 1 and 2, which was really good.

“It was a great weekend and shows how strong Swan Hill basketball is, and I think as a club we were all pretty happy with the results.”
