Tigers’ comeback win

A BRETT Collins-inspired second-half fightback helped Macorna record a six-point Golden Rivers Football League win against Wakool.

The Tigers’ seventh win of the season came after the home side trailed by 22 points at the main break.

Electing to kick with the breeze in the opening term, Macorna did enough to hold a 10-point lead at the first break.

However, Wakool took control of the game in the second quarter.

David Hutchinson kicked five of his six first half goals in the quarter, with Ben Jones and Luke Kirkland adding to the procession.

The Tigers had no match for Jones’ midfield nous and the speed of Conlan Gunn.

Luke Spalding and Stephen Donat kicked the home team’s only goals of the term to trail by more than three goals at the main break. The Tigers began the third term with all the momentum.

Collins’ presence in front of goal helped the home side reclaim the lead midway through the quarter, with Ricky Wild and Daniel Coates also benefiting from the efforts of Mark Carter and Brady Walerys.

Kirkland booted Wakool’s sole goal of the term to trail by 18 points at the final break.

Knowing the side would be kicking with the breeze in the final term, Wakool lifted its intensity.

However, Kirkland and Hutchinson were inaccurate when it counted.

The Hawks were able to get within a goal, but Collins sealed the game when it counted.

Darren Turner cut the deficit to six points, but there was not enough time for an equaliser.

Collins finished with three goals for the Tigers, with Wild, Coates, Chris Wilson and Brad Organ booting two majors each.

Hutchinson did not add to his six-goal, first half tally, while Kirkland booted four goals for the Hawks.

Spalding, Organ and Collins were best on ground for the Tigers, with Hutchinson, Jones and Matthew Landini standing out for the Hawks.

Macorna will finish its season at Nullawil on Saturday, with Wakool to host Quambatook.
