ECHUCA Discoveries just had one of their anticipated events on their calendar, the Gymkhana.
Participants were invited out to Lacy Park Farm in Tooleybuc for hands-on work with horses, dogs, and sheep.
Traditionally a horse-riding competition, the event has been reimagined as an inclusive and accessible day centred on riding, leading, and learning, giving participants of all abilities the opportunity to engage in a supportive environment.
Echuca Discoveries director Joanne O’Bree and her team combine animal care, outdoor education, and fun-filled events that give people of all abilities the chance to shine.
“Held a few times a year, the Gymkhanas bring together participants for a celebration of achievement, personal growth, and rural fun,” Ms O’Bree said.
“We’ve got everything from big stock horses to tiny miniature ponies, so there’s something for everyone.
“Some might start the day a little nervous, just leading a pony, but by the end they’ve competed in multiple events and are glowing with pride.”
It’s not just about horses; participants also lead dogs through obstacle courses, try their hand at archery and roping, and take part in friendly competitions, with trophies and ribbons awarded throughout the day.
These sessions build confidence, empathy, and practical skills, and feed directly into the Gymkhana events.
“The Gymkhanas are a way for the riders to show what they’ve learned in a really fun and supportive environment,” Ms O’Bree said.
At the most recent event, Joanne Stevenson was named Champion Rider, while Ryan Hulland earned Reserve Champion Independent Rider and received a special trophy for Overall Horsemanship.
“Everyone really enjoyed themselves,” Ms O’Bree said. “It’s the kind of day out that stays with you.”
Whether it’s leading a dog, riding a horse or learning archery, the Echuca Discoveries program continues to help people step into their strengths in meaningful and lasting ways.
