Strong start for Auskick

THE Tooleybuc-Manangatang Auskick season got off to a flying start with around 20 eager young footballers taking to the field.

Held at the Tooleybuc Oval, and occasionally in Manangatang, the program runs on Thursday evenings from 5pm.

Auskick coach David McNicol said he was thrilled with the turnout and community support.

“It’s a great result for us based on previous years,” said Mr McNicol.

“We’re just two weeks in now, and we’ve had around 20 kids register, with a few more coming along to give it a try.”

The program caters for children aged between five and 12, and focuses on building fundamental footy skills in a fun and inclusive environment.

“We work on kicking, handballing, marking, and even a bit of tackling using the tackle bag,” Mr McNicol said.

“And we always end with a game, which the kids love.”

With a broad mix of ages and abilities, the sessions are tailored to individual skill levels.

Children are often grouped by ability rather than just age, allowing each participant to develop at their own pace.

Parent volunteers also play a vital role in helping run the activities and support the younger players.

“We really aim to cater to all abilities,” Mr McNicol said.

“Whether a child is shy, confident, brand new to the sport, or footy-obsessed, we want them to feel welcome and supported.”

The Auskick program serves as an introductory to junior football, with many children progressing through into under-10s and under-12s at the Tooleybuc-Manangatang Football Netball Club

While the official program requires registration through the AFL’s Play HQ platform, families are encouraged to bring their children along for a trial session before committing.

“We’re always happy for new kids to come and give it a go,” Mr McNicol said.

“The more the merrier.”

Safety remains a top priority, with a focus on low-contact drills and proper technique.

“We emphasise correct form and make sure everything’s done in a safe, positive way,” he said.

“It’s about having fun, being active, and learning new skills in a supportive environment.”

With strong early numbers and enthusiastic community backing, the Tooleybuc-Manangatang Auskick program is set for another fun season for the kids.
