World class light shows for Robinvale, Swan Hill

A “WORLD class” light show proposed for the riverfronts of Robinvale and Swan Hill next year is forecast to drive “significant” economic, visitation and tourism benefits.

Swan Hill Rural City Council has endorsed support for the light shows by agreeing to seek funding through the Regional Event Fund to host the Luna Lights Journey in April and May next year.

Council development and planning director Heather Green said the 10 night light show in Swan Hill and subsequent four night display in Robinvale would provide a “spectacular night event experience” that would have a “compelling impact” on the host regions.

“It is proposed to apply for a significant grant under the Regional Event Fund to support the creation of a world class, temporary attraction highlighting our unique culture and rich history — Luna Lights Journey,” Ms Green said.

“It is proposed this event will attract visitors from outside the region, with a collection of curated lighting, light art sculptures and multimedia installations within the riverfront precincts of both Swan Hill and Robinvale,” she said.

Ms Green said the proposed events, estimated to cost $175,000, would focus on the overarching themes of culture, flora, fauna, land and cosmos.

“In addition to the great enjoyment that residents, visitors and the broader community will experience in visiting Luna Lights Journey, it is the broader economic impacts – hospitality revenue, accommodation bookings and general visitor spend – that will have a compelling impact on Swan Hill and Robinvale communities,” Ms Green said.

“Similar shows elsewhere have provided an outstanding return on investment to those towns that have hosted these dynamic events.”The installation will follow a proven light and sound journey format, with bespoke creative and technical consideration to suit the riverfront precincts layout and its natural botanical assets.”

Ms Green said a key component of the event will be to showcase the region’s rich Aboriginal culture and history, through interactive displays and performances, as well as incorporating the latest technology sound and light installations.

“This includes incorporating traditional storytelling and Welcome to Country ceremonies before transforming into a modern light and interactive story show,” she said.

“In Robinvale, its hoped to use public space along the riverfront precinct.

“The ability to incorporate Robinvale into this event provides the opportunity to expand target market into the Mildura region, as well as showcase Aboriginal and cultural diverse features the region is renowned for.”

Swan Hill would first host the Luna Lights Journey from April 21 to April 30 before it moves on to Robinvale from May 4 to May 6.

Councillors were told that similar events in Bendigo, Moama and Albury had seen significant visitation numbers during “quiet” tourism periods with an “outstanding” return on investment.
