CENTRAL Murray Road Safe Group (CMRSG) in conjunction with Swan Hill police have issued caution on the region’s roads during winter.
CMRSG chairwoman Beryl Lowe said drivers must ensure their headlights, tail lights and number plate lights were operating effectively when driving at night or in hazardous conditions.
“It is important for drivers to turn on their lights in hazardous conditions, because you will see lights before you see a car,” Ms Lowe said.
“You need to have your lights on in inclement weather, and make sure that all your lights are working probably.”
CMRSG said the penalty for failing to have appropriate lights was $228 and one demerit point.
Swan Hill police Sergeant Les McPhee said police had received several complaints in relation to drivers driving in rain or fog without their headlights on.
“It is an offence to drive without your headlights on in hazardous conditions, and it’s not only for you to see better as a driver but for other drivers to see you,” Sgt McPhee said.
