R U OK? is a simple question that has the potential to save lives and Swan Hill has embraced the national campaign with local activities aimed at “checking in” with friends.
The R U OK? theme suggests just taking the time to share a cuppa with a friend and asking “are you okay?’ can make a big difference in the life of someone who may be battling with depression.
Mallee Family Care led local activities with support from Cafe 202 who distributed R U OK? branded cups.
202 Cafe owner Brianna Kent said she was pleased to be part of the initiative as checking in with friends and raising awareness of depression was an important issue.
“The cafe has been involved with this campaign in the past and we thought it was a great cause to continue,” she said.
Mallee Family Care also held a morning tea for staff as part of the campaign.
Mallee Family Care Mental Health Support Program team leader Lyn Andrew said the informal event was well attended by staff and was a great way to get people talking.
“Our event aimed to inform people about how to ask someone if they are okay with a focus on checking in on colleagues if you notice they may not be travelling too well, she said.
Anyone requiring support for depression can contact Lifeline 24 hours a day on 13 11 14.
