THE Federal Government’s decision to increase cigarette prices in a bid to reduce Australia’s smoking rate has been criticised by a local medical practitioner.
With plans to implement an increase over the next four years, the first increment took place on August 1.
Tristar Medical Group Swan Hill Doctor Gurvider Brar believes as a result of the scheme, an increase in crime and health problems will occur.
He explained that while all cigarettes contain lethal substances, the cheaper brands have the highest level of chemicals.
Dr Brar said as the price increases smokers will purchase the cheaper ones ultimately causing worse health problems.
“If people find they cannot afford the cheaper ones they will find another, cheaper addiction,” he said.
