Tigers building for finals

SECOND-PLACED Woorinen claimed another scalp on Saturday, after trouncing the Cohuna Kangas by 53 goals.

Scoring consistently at centre passes and turnovers, the Tigers had tripled the Kangas score by the final whistle.

Coach Tess Burton said a stellar performance by Woorinen’s attack, coupled with another strong showing by Tayla Stanley in goal shooter, got the Tigers well over the line.

“Coming off a great win from Lalbert last week we were obviously not taking Cohuna lightly because they are quite a tough team,” Burton said.

“So going out and trying to get a good start paid off.”

“Our attack end really gelled…the centre-wing attack combo worked really well. We were hitting our targets.

“Each week we need to hit that target.”

Stanley netted a staggering 63 goals for the Tigers, and her shooting partner in Goal Attack Amy Cadd was named Woorinen’s best on ground.

Burton paid credit to the shooting sensation, telling The Guardian “Each week she is setting a new level and a new standard, not only for herself but for the team and the competition.”

“Obviously a lot of teams are wanting to shut her down.”

However, far from being a one-woman-show, the Tigers are reaching their zenith with cohesion an underlying factor.

“We are playing really well as a team — we’re good friends and we have a lot of fun together.”

Burton paid credit to the Kangas for a game well played.

“Fair play to Cohuna….they have some really nice players.

“Kobie Free [goal shooter] barely missed.”

Next week’s match-up is with the Demons, who lost narrowly to premiers Swan Hill on Saturday, will test the Tiger’s current winning streak.

Burton is expecting big things, particularly looking forward to the competition between Stanley and Demons goal keeper Carly-Marie Clark.

“Carly will match really well with Tayla,” Burton said.

“It will be a really good tussle between those two.”

Mindful of the Demons shooting abilities, with Denise Snyder guaranteed to be dangerous in the circle, Burton said the Tigers game plan would be tweaked accordingly.

“Each week we sort of restart say righto, we look at it, match our players and go out.”

“I think it will be tough.”

Even though the finals are within the Tigers sights at this stage Burton is staying pragmatic.

“You can’t win a premiership in round 9,” she said.

“It’s all about building for us at the moment, going from strength to strength on the road to the finals in September.”
